Word of Mouth: How Wordle Became The Internet's Favorite Puzzle Game Overnight - Trending

The case of the green and yellow tiles found all over social media has been decoded.

Word has gotten out on Wordle, a web-based game meant to be played for only three minutes a day but has gotten internet users hooked and coming back for more.

The mechanics are simple enough.

“Guess the Wordle in six tries. Each guess must be a valid five letter word. Hit the enter button to submit. After each guess, the color of the tiles will change to show how close your guess was to the word,” read the official instructions.

A new “Wordle” is available each day. But once players get it right or wrong, they need to wait until tomorrow to enjoy the word guessing game again.

Everyone plays the same Wordle, adding a competitive element to the game. Moreover, players can share their spoiler-free results on social media to flex how few guesses it took them and which tiles they got correctly per attempt.

The Last Word

Wordle was developed by software engineer Josh Wardle, with the game’s title being a play on his surname.

Since its release in October 2021, Wordle has seen its audience grow from less than a hundred to over 2 million.

Similar and copycat applications have even gained traction for containing the same title or gameplay.

The overwhelmingly positive reception surprised Wardle, who initially created Wordle for himself and his partner. He made the game public upon learning that his relatives had become rapidly obsessed with it.

Once the sharing feature was added, Wordle quickly went viral on Twitter.

Wardle has maintained that, despite the game’s success, he has no intention of monetizing it or appropriating the data of players.
