Wheels of Fortune: Sotheby’s Celebrates 20 Years of the Nike SB Dunk in a Special Auction - Lookbook

Nike turned 20. Sotheby’s was there. Can we make it any more obvious?

Sotheby’s will present its dedicated online auction “Nike SB | 20 Years” from April 14 to 25 in celebration of the brand and its influence on sneaker culture.

Although Dunks were originally launched in 1985 for basketball, their popularity among skateboarders led to the formal launch of the Nike Skateboarding line in 2002.

Sotheby’s will feature some of the rarest Dunks in the brand’s history in an auction gathering 100 lots in the auction house’s most diverse offering to date.

Former Nike executive Sandy Bodecker is credited with building one of the company’s most revered subdivisions in the early 2000s through the Nike SB line.

The sneaker line’s designs range from beer bottles to guitar cases, horror films, jewelry, animals, arts, and cities.

Highlights include the Nike SB Dunk High Pro “FLOM’’ with Signed Box and Skateboard Deck, Nike SB Dunk Low Pro “Paris” Bernard Buffet Promo Sample, Nike Dunk Hi Orchard Street “Brazil,” and Nike SB Dunk Low Pro Reese Forbes “Denim.”

The estimated value of the lots range from 5,000 to 750,000 Hong Kong dollars.

“What sets Nike SB apart from other competitive brands is the unbridled creativity, collaborators, materials, and whimsical highly thematic designs that define a generation of sneakerheads. Nike has explored hundreds of concepts–often with a sense of humor–through its Nike SB Dunks,” reads the auction’s digital catalog.
