Show Me the Money: What’s New With the Winklevi? Digital Ang Pao Apparently - The Scene

The Facebook co-founders are introducing Gifting Crypto.

Giving ang pao has always been a huge part of Lunar New Year celebrations. Though the memory of receiving these red packets may still be strong, many of us are now the ones handing it out.

While the introduction of digital red packets has made actual gift giving easier, a bigger issue still remains when it comes to giving out fiat currency.

The ongoing global pandemic has resulted in rising inflation rates. COVID has not only affected our personal lives, but economies all over are continuously taking hits as well. How can we ensure our ang pao stand the test of time, truly benefit our loved ones, and represent our well wishes?

Well, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (more commonly known as the Winklevoss twins, or, as we prefer to call them, the Winklevi) seem to have an answer.

Gemini, the global cryptocurrency exchange founded by the brothers, is launching Gifting Crypto.

Exclusive to Singapore and Hong Kong during the CNY season, this new service will enable users to gift loved ones bitcoin ang paos. This makes the ang pao, according to Gemini, more than a gift—it’s an investment.

“Our aim is to show how the technology that lays the foundation of the future, is able to marry much-loved traditions around the world,” says Feroze Medora, interim head of Gemini Asia Pacific. “Bitcoin is more than just a fad you hear in the news, it is the future of money, and we want to make the crypto world accessible to all.”

Gemini’s Gifting Crypto is a new permanent feature and will be available for use for any occasion: from birthdays to weddings, and more. Gifting Crypto will be made available in more countries soon.
