What Sparks Joy: Marie Kondo Opens Up About Her Messy Home And Why It’s Good For Her - Skin Deep

Marie Kondo, host of ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo,’ admits that she has given up on keeping her home tidy at all times.

In her Netflix series, Marie Kondo advised viewers to only keep what “sparks joy” and throw out the rest. This became a mantra for many people who were looking to clean up their homes.

“Up until now, I was a professional tidier, so I did my best to keep my home tidy at all times,” says Kondo during a recent webinar.

“I have kind of given up on that, in a good way for me,” she admits. “Now I realize what is important to me is enjoying spending time with my children at home.”

The organizing queen gave birth to her third child in 2021. Parents will know how difficult it is to keep a home clean while taking care of young children. Kondo admits that she is no exception.

In her latest book, Marie Kondo’s Kurashi at Home: How to Organize Your Space and Achieve Your Ideal Life, she focuses on finding happiness and calmness in a messy home.

This could be through small tasks, like cooking your favorite meal or drinking tea. If you need to clean, you can start with a single junk drawer or even your purse.

She tells readers to prioritize what is important to them. Sometimes, keeping the home neat and tidy just isn’t at the top of the list. There’s no need to stress about it too much.

“My home is messy, but the way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time at this stage of my life,” she says.

Kondo’s “does it spark joy” mantra has helped many people with their mental health. It guided them towards discovering how a clean and tidy home can bring calmness.

Her new revelation is forgiving of people who can’t focus on cleaning all the time. However, her past advice still helps with developing a positive attitude towards housework.
