Toyo Eatery Remains Only PH Entry in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2020 - Mise en Place

Some good news during this worldwide pandemic, but sadly it will be a bit of a wait before we get a taste of Chef Jordy’s dishes again.

In its sophomore entry on the list, Toyo Eatery remains the solo restaurant from the Philippines in this year’s rankings. Debuting 43rd in 2019, it has taken a step down in this year’s roster landing the 44th spot in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2020.

Ironic enough, the new list was released yesterday in a time where many restaurants across the continent, even the world, will be temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The full list was revealed during a “virtual event” on the 50 Best website. On the unique presentation of this year’s list they stated, “Due to travel restrictions in Asia and beyond, this year’s edition of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants is taking the shape of a virtual announcement–the first of its kind in the history of 50 Best.”

Bagging the top spot for its second consecutive year is the modern french restaurant, Odette in Singapore. Owner and Chef, Julien Royer, shared his gratitude saying, “It’s an amazing and humbling recognition for the whole team–nearly 40 colleagues who have been working at Odette since the opening almost five years ago.” He also imparted some hopeful words amidst the tense times the dining industry is currently in: “The situation at the moment is very unpredictable and scary for everyone, but I would like to send a message of togetherness. We’re all in the same boat: no matter the restaurant, the cuisine or where we are, it’s affecting us all. We have to put all our efforts together to ultimately carry on doing what we love.”
