In 1851, John Kiehl opened a homeopathic pharmacy at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 13th Street where a Pear Tree once stood. That tree, which was planted by New Amsterdam Governor Peter Stuyvesant, used to be referred to as the oldest living thing in New York. This is perhaps a sign of great things to come for Kiehl’s, the global brand that developed out of that Manhattan apothecary.

Today, Kiehl’s is celebrating 170 years in the business, 15 decades of which operated solely from that East Village brick-and-mortar. After being acquired by megabrand L’Oreal in the early aughts, the American cosmetics label has since spread across the world, opening hundreds of stores in the last 20 years.

In the country, the first Kiehl’s store opened at the corner of Greenbelt 5, Makati facing Legazpi St. From there, more spaces were launched in upscale wings of Metro Manila malls, including Mall of Asia, Podium, and SM North EDSA. Last year, as a quick pivot to pandemic restrictions, it opened its Lazada Official Store.

To celebrate its impressive longevity, Kiehl’s is bringing back old favorites and best-sellers this month through two lines.

Hero products

The first line, Kiehl’s Commemorative Collection, recalls some of the brand’s hero products over the years. This collection of classics is housed in white and gold embellished glass packaging and a Kiehl’s box in the shape of a cabinet, which could be mounted on a wall.

Each of these greatest hits represent the brand’s solution to everyday skin problems. The Calendula Herbal Extract Toner, for example, soothes and refreshes troubled skin and reduces redness and blemishes while the anti-aging serum Midnight Recovery Concentrate hydrates overnight for a smoother, healthier complexion and radiant glow.

The Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado, meanwhile, is said to improve overall appearance of the under-eye area while Ultra Facial Cream is a daily moisturizer formulated with Squalane and Glycerin to soften skin.

Blast from the past

Kiehl’s Limited Heritage Collection, on the other hand, brings back three products from its deep vault, including essence oils from the 1920s to toners from the 1960s. Each are brought back with an updated or an expansion of its original line.

The Heritage French Rosewater Toner isinspired by a 1960s that highlighted the popular ingredients. This new skin-soothing solution is enriched with imported rose water and Turkish rose petals, featuring a delicate, fresh aroma.

Based on infusions of the 1920s, Kiehl’s Essence Oils now comes in three fragrances each representing a desire: Love Luring, which is meant to enhance attraction; Fortune-Seeking, to draw good luck; and Jinx-Removing, for personal freedom and new starts.

Kiehl’s Glycerin Soaps were popular back in the 1990s, lathers up into a luxurious foam that removes impurities while conditioning and refreshing the skin. It comes in either a Fresh Herbal smell (which is better for the body and hands), or unscented (which is meant for the face).

The Commemorative Collection is available in all stores, on the Kiehl’s website, and Lazada. The Heritage Collection will be available throughout the month of May exclusively at the Official Kiehl’s store on Lazada. On May 27, Lazada will have its Super Brand Day, where you can get up to 50 percent off on their top-selling products.
