Heard said she had evidence that could have changed the ruling in her favor.
“To my dying day, [I] will stand by every word of my testimony,” Amber Heard said in her first interview since losing the legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp.
On Friday, Heard sat down with Savannah Guthrie of NBC News as she continued to defend herself and assert that she was a victim of abuse by Depp.
“It’s unfortunate that while Johnny is looking to move forward with his life, the defendant and her team are back to repeating, reimagining, and re-litigating matters that have already been decided by the court and a verdict that was unequivocally decided by a jury in Johnny’s favor,” his team said.
In response, Heard’s representatives said that if Depp had a problem, “We recommend that Johnny himself sit down with Savannah Gutherie for an hour and answer all her questions,”
In 2018, Heard wrote a Washington Post op-ed identifying herself as a domestic abuse survivor. Although she did not name Depp, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor “claimed in a lawsuit that it hindered his career.”
As a result, Depp sued his ex-wife for $50 million for defamation. Heard tried to dismiss the lawsuit, but the 36-year-old countersued for $100 million when a judge denied her request.
After the seven-week trial, a jury decided in Depp’s favor, and the actor was awarded more than $10 million in damages.
Denied evidence
During the Dateline interview, Heard claimed that notes by her therapist, which she says could have swayed the verdict to her favor, were not allowed in court.
“[My doctor’s] notes represented years—years—of real-time explanations of what was going on,” the 36-year-old stated. In January 2012, Heard told her therapist Depp “hit her” and “threw her on the floor.”
The notes include that Depp “threw her against a wall and threatened to kill her” in 2013. However, the judge ruled the notes “hearsay and inadmissible.”
Despite the turbulent, high-profile court action between the former couple, Heard admits she still loves her ex-husband. “‘Absolutely. I love him. I loved him with all my heart,’ she said after Guthrie played their engagement video from 2014. “I have no bad feelings or ill will toward him at all.”
