Former chairman Tom Ford stepped down from his role on May 31 after holding the post for three years.
On Tuesday, the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced Thom Browne as their new chairman, effective this January. According to Vogue Business, the New York designer was elected unanimously by the CFDA’s board of directors, which includes former chairman Tom Ford.
Ford stepped down from his role on May 31 after holding the post for three years. Currently, CFDA CEO Steven Kolb is the council’s interim chairman, who will have the position until Browne’s entrance. Besides Ford, Browne succeeds former heads, Diane Von Furstenberg and Stan Herman.
“I am very excited about taking on the chairmanship of the CFDA. I feel a huge responsibility in working with Steven and the CFDA team to carry on the positive and important work of Tom, Diane, and Stan,” Browne said in a statement.

“I also feel that it is important to give back to an industry that has supported me so well over the last 20 years. I am so proud to be an American designer… there is so much happening in American design today that the world needs to really see and recognize and truly appreciate.”
Browne launched his New York-based luxury brand in 2003. Since then, the 57-year-old has been decorated with awards, such as CFDA’s Menswear Designer of the Year for 2006, 2013, and 2015.
CFDA was founded in 1962 by one of America’s most influential publicists, Eleanor Lambert. Its mission is to strengthen the impact of American fashion globally. In addition to their famed board members, such as Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, Prabal Gurung, and Michael Kors, CFDA has 477 of the US’ leading womenswear, menswear, jewelry, and accessory designers.
