Lagerfeld goes above and beyond even in posthumous auctions of his belongings.
Sotheby’s recent auction featuring the drawings of the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has achieved triple its estimate.

The “KARL, Inspirations, Succession Karl Lagerfeld Part IV” auction raised a total of 350,406 euros (roughly $355,000). It offered Lagerfeld’s sketches from the late 1960s through 2018, taken from his apartments on 8 Rue des Saints-Pères and 17 Quai Voltaire.
The German creative director rose to international prominence for his work at Chanel and Fendi.
Sotheby’s said that its auction demonstrates Lagerfeld’s creative power as a masterful illustrator through the graphic work he left behind.
“One could say there’s a very Karl Lagerfeld style throughout his graphic work. Without a doubt, his eye for photographs–and his connections with cinema, photography, literature, music,” Sotheby’s specialist Caroline Lescure said.
Of the 85 lots, the most expensive sale involved Lagerfeld’s original sketch from the early 1970s for French fashion house Chloé. It sold for 40,320 euros (roughly $41,000), or 40 times its estimate.
The Sotheby’s Paris auction follows a series of successful sales that featured the contents of the fashion icon’s residences.
“They constitute a unique testimonial to the history of fashion and the taste of a designer who produced work of unparalleled power, having reached the status of an international icon and idol,” Sotheby’s concluded.
