The sublime and vast world of the arts is where Mara Michelle Geriene grew up in. With a painter for a mother and a musician for a father, Mara was naturally pulled into the universe of music and dance, letting her hone her musicality at a tender age. “My parents were very supportive of my music tastes,” Mara says. “I owe that all to my parents for allowing me to learn and hear everything and immerse myself in everything I could.” Admiring Celine Dion and Britney Spears, belting out their songs as a child helped her appreciate all kinds of talent in the arts. From singing her way into the world, Mara eventually came across a new passion—acting—and has fallen in love with it.

Taking on many distinct roles at the same time, it is no wonder why Brian Poe Llamanzares is always on the move. Navigating through multiple high-stakes industries—from climate change and disaster risk management studies, journalism, entrepreneurship in the fashion and F&B landscape, and of course, politics, the wealth of his experiences taught him to balance his time well. “It’s easy to switch hats when I know which one to prioritize,” Brian says, reiterating that priority has always been putting others before himself. His primary business, Time Master watches, was “born out of passion and designed to be able to support social causes.” True to the vision, a portion of the sales helps fund MoveEd’s cause and Habitat for Humanity in its response efforts for COVID-19-affected communities. Brian has mounted an anti-bacterial clothing line as well, Someday, Maybe, with good friend Roxanne Montealegre, that keeps jobs in the industry. “Whether politics or business, as long as the goal is clear, I believe I can still make a difference,” Brian attests.

In this hyperactive, by-the-second age, no one is a stranger to the seemingly established practice of working on multiple passions at the same time. Hustling, as it has been branded, has become the standard, and for every pursuit, it is never enough to be complacent. No matter the industry, there must be eagerness and commitment to chase a rigor of excellence. For Isabelle Daza, Mark Bumgarner, Pam Quinones, Mark Nicdao, Sambie Tung, and Mito Fabie, fulfilling their goals is among the essentials of a meaningful life. As known figures in their respective fields, many wonder how exactly these powerhouses navigated their way to reaching their status at present.

In this hyperactive age where cities are packed way past the brim with life and people hustling about, it was nice to see a change within the quiet walls of the storied Intramuros. The world seemed to take a slower pace as I observe a young woman prepare for her cover shoot from a glance, the suits and accessories all laid out on a table in the quaint Batala Bar. Although it began raining sometime during the early stage of the shoot, Rebecca Plaza remains poised as she walks around the old yet well-maintained Casa Manila, following the photographer’s directions with enthusiasm. In-between trying to find shelter from the rain and pleasant conversations, Rebecca is indeed a woman who continuously leads a meaningful life beyond the face of a rousing powerhouse within the architecture and design industry.

There are moments where you just have to pause and be at awe when an unlikely pair meets and chemistry builds instantly. This is what we witnessed with the convergence of our cover personalities at their photoshoot, with the regal and dapper Tap Room of the Manila Hotel as the backdrop of the unexpected, but nonetheless monumental meeting. The bar’s wooden walls accented by bright red furniture make for an adequate setting that reflects the contrasting yet harmonic interactions of these two personas. MEGA January 2020

Sing out loud. Make yourself heard. MEGA welcomes the New Year with three women who know their due and take up the space, all while lifting up their fellow females and all the aspects of femininity. Sarah Lahbati takes a new direction as a fashion darling, doting mother and soon-to-be wife. Regine Velasquez Alcasid, a true MEGA woman if there ever was one, lends her hard-earned wisdom and passion to the stage, and Sarah Geronimo, an icon of her generation, a woman who discovered her strength by purposely being vulnerable. MEGA also celebrates a brand new direction, a new beginning with fashion’s green reckoning with the finest and bravest taking a stand for the earth and future generations. The future is here and it’s still something to sing about, a song to end on a major key.

BluPrint Volume 4 (2019)

For our anniversary issue, BluPrint embarks on an exploration of material honesty as embodied by raw concrete, visiting three countries in search of spaces that express the versatility, patina, and brutal candor of this material. From a Jakarta studio engulfed in flora, a Kuala Lumpur concrete retreat, to a Singaporean home making the most of the raw material’s sculptural potential, you will find concrete transcending its workman-like reputation, molded by some of the brightest, most creative minds in the ASEAN region.

BluPrint Volume 3 (2019)

What makes a building delightful? Is it ‘only’ that it functions well? How many buildings do we even know of whose parts attend to the comfort, wellness, and many needs of human beings? This issue, Form Follows Values, is our first attempt in BluPrint to tackle the subject. It is not an easy one to have because it entails opening up about our values and examining whether our work has lived up to them. It means being able to talk about the stuff that really matters in our clients’ lives (not whether they want a six-car garage, roof deck, and infnity pool) and whether the architecture will help sustain and nurture these values.

BluPrint Volume 2 (2019)

The government says: “Build, Build, Build.” We say: “Design, Design, Design.” Considering the totality of what gets built in this country, good architecture is nothing short of a miracle. But the building boom of the past few years has yielded some miracles. There’s the NEX Tower, with its four-story lobby and 11-meter-high green walls, designed by SOM. There’s the Cor Jesu chapel, a collaboration of Kenneth Cobonpue and Zubu Design Associates. Then, there’s Budji+Royal Architecture+Design who have been successfully dealing with tremendous pressure to deliver on skimpy budgets and abbreviated timelines. What they are creating in just over a year’s time in New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac, is miraculous indeed, thanks to general contractor MTD Philippines’ resolve to finish months ahead of the 2019 SEA Games athletes’ arrival in November.

BluPrint Volume 1 (2019)

Like a bridge, sustainability fashions a solution; it examines and critiques in order to identify what is lacking in the environment. Great sustainable designs strive for a universal consensus, just like how truth illuminates all gaps, margins, and recesses of human life. Peruse the pages of BluPrint’s recent issue and we learn about how Dominic Galicia has transformed the Hyundai Logistics Center into a clear testament to the positive consequences of planning for built environments, how Earl Forlales’ award-winning CUBO addresses the perpetuating homelessness and poverty in the Philippines, and the Dutch architecture firm UNStudio answer to the ever-growing issues surrounding densely populated cities. We also discover Vo Trong Nghia Architects’ consistent effort to create and incorporate verdure in homes, and how the House in Leiria by Aires Mateus prominently stands as a consequence of the confrontation between figures and configuration, all the while articulating light and space. Sustainability is not just a simple impression that gradually fades later on. It is a commitment to construct things that will endure, and to give these things a lasting significance.

BluPrint Special 2 (2019)

This special issue features Filipino and ASEAN firms that have made it to the World Architecture Festival 2019. Why ASEAN? Because we share cultural, climatic, and geographical similarities and can learn from each other. Not to mention, we belong to an integrated region that will inevitably allow borderless practice. We also feature two Filipino WAF winners, who share their thoughts on design issues, as well as advice on presenting before the live jury and audience. The WAF 2017 winners of Small Project of the Year, Alexander Furunes and Sudarshan Khadka (representing Locsin and Partners) for example, had this to say: “Architectural projects are multifaceted, and to condense this into eight minutes is not easy. However, eight minutes is plenty if the ideas behind the projects reflect the actions taken… Aim for clarity, find your voice, and have the guts to go for it.
