In its commitment to leave a smaller carbon footprint and adhere to more eco-friendly practices, French luxury groulvmh

(LVMH) is opening a research center dedicated to sustainability.

The site will house 300 researchers, as well as start-ups in co-working spaces who will focus on luxury goods and the protection of the planet through new materials, innovative biotechnology, and digital data solutions, according to WWD.

It will be located in Saclay, a government-designated hub for research labs in the suburbs southwest of Paris.

The new site is a separate research center from Helios, LVMH’s facility opened in 2013 dedicated to developing new processes and securing new patents in cosmetics and beauty sciences. The largest production site of luxury perfumes, makeup, and skincare in Paris, the 18,000-sq. mile site houses at least 250 researchers for the group’s perfume and cosmetics division.

“We want the [fashion] research and development center to be extremely product- and solutions-driven,” says Jean Baptiste Voisin, chief strategy officer of LVMH. “Getting rid of plastics is at the core.”

Through the facility, researchers are expected to make prototypes, as well as evaluate the environmental impact of new materials and methodologies considering factors such as energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, plastic content, and the extent of recycled or waste materials employed. This is to ultimately make a difference from the product’s manufacturing process to end-of-life.

No official opening date has been announced yet, but LVMH is targeting to launch the new research center by 2024 or mid-2025.
