Twice Honored With Breakthrough Award At Billboard's Women in Music

It’s the year of “yes” for the girl group that has been working nonstop to reach new goals.

Since Twice debuted as a group in 2015, the members have hardly had any breaks between numerous singles, albums, tours, and endorsements.

This year, they received the Breakthrough Award at the Billboard Women in Music Awards. They are the first Korean group to be given this honor.

The award was presented by singer Sabrina Carpenter. “I was especially thrilled they were being recognized because I’m a really big stan,” she admitted to the audience.

“They’re so talented, and now I consider myself a ONCE, which is what half this room is! I really hope this award will expose them to a wider U.S. audience.”

Chaeyoung, one of the group’s rappers, began their acceptance speech saying, “Ever since we became Twice, we believed in each other to always be together when taking a step toward our future.

“This moment is especially meaningful because all nine of us are standing here together in front of our fans who made our dreams come true.”

Twice’s youngest member, Tzuyu, added that, “This accomplishment will forever motivate us to challenge ourselves to break more barriers.”

Twice’s Identity

The group also spoke to Billboard ahead of the event in an interview. They were asked about their global success despite the language difference.

“I think it’s the songs of ours that carry Twice’s color rather than the language in which the song is sung,” said the group’s leader, Jihyo. “I don’t think the language is that relevant in carrying out Twice’s [identity].”

Later in the evening, the girls performed their new English single, “Moonlight Sunrise.” The song was co-written by Filipino singer-songwriter Nina Nelson.

Released back in January, the song debuted and peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 84. The rest of the album, Ready to Be, will be dropping on March 10, 2023.
