Work, fan favorite!
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced its first Oscars Fan Favorite category where voting is open to the public.
It’s anybody’s game here since contenders do not need to go through the Academy’s traditional process of screening, nominating, and shortlisting the titles to be recognized.
However, an entrant’s Favorite Movie can only be one of just under 300 eligible titles listed in the Reminder List of Productions Eligible For The 94th Academy Awards. Home movies or films that are not eligible cannot be used as a favorite movie.
Voters may submit their entries via Twitter or the competition’s official website.
Eligible entries through Twitter must be posted by a public account following The Academy (@TheAcademy). Voters can post up to 20 tweets per day for their favorite movie of 2021.
Alternatively, voters can submit their entries up to 20 times per day on the applicable website. They must complete the entry form by providing their full name, email address, and state of residence.
The film that receives the most votes by March 3 will be recognized during the broadcast of the Oscars ceremony to be held at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center on March 27.
Double Win
The new competition also doubles as sweepstakes where voters get the chance to win a trip to the 95th Academy Awards scheduled in late March 2023.
The sweepstakes are open only to legal adult residents of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. To enter and participate, voters must have internet access and an active email and/or Twitter account.
Winners will be randomly selected. The odds of winning a prize depend on the total amount of eligible entries received during the promotion period.
Three Grand Prize winners will each receive a three-day, two-night trip for themselves and one travel guest. They will all attend the 95th Academy Awards as guest presenters.
The Grand Prize has a total approximate retail value of $1,650. It covers round-trip coach air transportation, hotel accommodations, round-trip ground transportation, and a $250 Amex gift card.
Unpopular Opinion
The Academy had controversially announced in August 2018 that a new category was being designed around achievement in popular film.
A month later, they announced that they will not present the new Oscars category at the 91st Academy Awards.
“There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,” Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in a press release.
