ArtNet.com has just reported that iconic artist Pablo Picasso’s Young Girl with Basket of Flowers (1905) has just sold at a Christie’s auction for $115 million. This is a new record for a Rockefeller family estate sale. The early oil on canvas work from the artist portrays a nude girl holding a basket filled blooms. Reportedly bought by the Nahmad family, they refused to comment further and confirm the sale with ArtNet.com.

Although the work lacks most of Picasso’s signature hallmarks, the piece is now the sixth most expensive painting every sold at auction. Before the Rockefeller family, it was owned by legendary cultural figures Leo and Gertrude Stein who purchased it directly from the artist. David Rockefeller acquired the work in 1968. The powerful New York City family has over 300 works by Picasso.

The valuable painting will go on loan for a September-planned Picasso exhibit in Paris’s Musee d’Orsay, as confirmed by a spokesperson of the museum. The exhibit will focus on Picasso’s work between 1900 and 1906. It will be entitled “Picasso: Blue and Rose”, after his important blue and rose period, and will run from September 18 till January 6, 2019.
