The K-pop idol group is using their platform for good.
BTS has visited the White House in the United States to discuss anti-Asian hate crimes.
US President Joe Biden invited the South Korean boy band to personally discuss Asian inclusion and other important issues.
In a proclamation dated April 29, Biden said the United States needs to redouble its commitment to combatting the surge of anti-Asian hate crimes.
Such crimes have increased by 339 percent in 2021 compared to 2020, according to the president.
“Many other incidents of anti-Asian bias, xenophobia, and harassment that surfaced throughout the COVID-19 pandemic were not even reported,” Biden said.
Call for equality
Members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook each gave a brief statement, mostly in Korean with the assistance of an interpreter.
Jimin said BTS was devastated by the recent surge in hate crimes involving Asian Americans. “To put a stop to this and support the cause we’d like to take this opportunity to voice ourselves once again,” he set the tone.
Suga added that it is not wrong to be different. “I think equality begins when we open up and embrace all of our differences,” he said.
V similarly remarked that everyone has their own history. “We hope that today is one step closer to respecting and understanding each and everyone as a valuable person,” he said.
J-Hope and Jungkook then thanked their ARMY fanbase. They celebrated how music can transcend language and cultural barriers to unite different nationalities.

The visit coincides with the US observation of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
“It was great to meet with you, [BTS]. Thanks for all you’re doing to raise awareness around the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination. I look forward to sharing more of our conversation soon,” Biden wrote.
BTS leader RM commended the president for signing the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act into law.
“So we just want to be a little help and we truly appreciate the White House and the government’s trying to find solutions,” RM said in a video posted by Biden.
The president likewise recognized the cultural impact of BTS.
“People care a lot about what you say and what you’re doing is good for all people. It’s not just your great talent, it’s the message you’re communicating. It matters,” Biden concluded.
BTS has made a reputation for writing its own lyrics that comment on social issues. These usually concentrate on themes like self-love, individuality, and empowerment.
