Legacy Story: Assouline Is Releasing Collectible Books on Virgil Abloh’s Historical Tenure at Louis Vuitton - Arts & Culture

Personal reflections by Abloh’s friends and collaborators, like Naomi Campbell, Kendall Jenner, and Kid Cudi, are featured in the pages.

New York-based luxury publisher Assouline presents its newest title Louis Vuitton: Virgil Abloh. It was written by fashion critic Anders Christian Madsen, who assisted the late creative director with his A Manifesto project.

Abloh, who died in November 2021, made history by being the first Black American to hold an artistic director position at Louis Vuitton. The book, divided into eight chapters, tells the story of the Illinois native’s journey of breaking boundaries, representing the eight collections he orchestrated for Louis Vuitton menswear.

Assouline and Louis Vuitton are releasing two collectible covers under the Assouline Classics Collection.

Inner circle

The pages also showcase the complete catalog of the designer’s sneaker creations. Accompanying the more than 320 images are personal reflections from Abloh’s famous inner circle. The music, fashion, and creative personalities include Nigo, Naomi Campbell, Luka Sabbat, Kendall Jenner, and Kid Cudi.

In the work’s press release, Madsen notes that “as a Black creative with no formal training in fashion design, no list of established fashion houses on his CV, Abloh saw himself as an infiltrator in high fashion: a true outsider who would become a groundbreaking figure.”

Collectible covers

Assouline and Louis Vuitton are releasing two collectible covers under the Assouline Classics Collection. One uses a character from LV’s SS22 collection, “The Adventures of Zoooom with Friends.” Meanwhile, the other cover presents the red balloon from the Louis Vuitton SS22 runway in Miami—the show which paid tribute to Abloh and his creations shortly after his death.
