Luxury fashion brands often keep their design and manufacturing processes a secret to ensure that their best practices remain in-house.
An upcoming Hermès exhibition, however, is giving the public a peek into the inner workings of the fashion house, particularly its artisans and their craftsmanship.
Called “Hermès In The Making,” the event is set to present the storied past of the French luxury fashion house, as well as its current initiatives that reflect its future.
The exhibition is divided into four themes: preservation and transmission of know-how, respect for the quality of materials, commitment to the long-term, and regional anchoring. Visitors can explore these themes through guides and immersive activities.
Artisans from different design trades within the house will be present, too, along with their materials and tools, to share techniques. This also includes sharing their expertise on producing the handmade bags the brand is known for.
A Kelly bag, for instance, requires 18 to 24 hours to produce, with leather materials sourced from all over the world. The painstaking process and the demand for the bags result in six months to one year of waiting time for clients.
“Their work echoes our preoccupations, which are now more than ever at the heart of our modern times: preserving and developing savoir-faire—expertise which is often linked to a historical tradition or region—a quest for quality, durability and innovation, and respect for the surrounding environments,” the brand adds in a press release.
The workshops will include fragrance manufacturing, while round table discussions will gather interested guests to listen to talks about craftsmanship, innovation, and transmission.
A collection of films from Footsteps Across The World by Frédéric Laffont will also tell the story of the sustainable development at Hermès “in humanistic perspective.”
Happening from October 15 to 24 in Copenhagen’s Danish Architecture Center, the exhibition is open to guests, free of charge.
