The passing of Mugler, who described himself as a “director, show conceptor, perfume creator, costume designer, photographer,” was announced on his official social media pages the following day.

“We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr. Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday, January 23rd, 2022. May his soul Rest In Peace,” representatives of the designer posted.

Mugler made his name in the 1980s and 1990s with internationally renowned haute couture described as dramatic, eccentric, and theatrical.

He dressed the likes of Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Betty Lago—but a landmark moment was his iconic black dress with signature graphic neckline that graced Demi Moore in Indecent Proposal. The garment was regarded as one of the best on-screen dresses in cinematic history.

Mugler achieved further global success with the 1992 launch of the perfume Angel, acclaimed as one of the most legendary fragrances of all time.

Although he retired as a fashion designer in 2002, he made special cases under the House of Mugler.

Looks of his that gained attention over the years include Cirque du Soleil’s “Extravaganza” costumes in 2002, Beyoncé’s “I Am… World Tour” costumes in 2009, and Kim Kardashian’s “wet” couture dress for the Met Gala in 2019.

Pieces from the Mugler brand’s archive have also been recirculated upon request of celebrities, which only speaks of the designer’s influence and longevity.

His memory lives on among his collaborators and muses, as well as countless fans who continue to derive inspiration from his timeless work.
