This is How You Can Turn Used Nespresso Capsules Into New Products

For fans of Nespresso, the well-known brand has been serving you high-quality coffee to start your day. You came to love making coffee from the Nespresso capsules. But you might think the capsules are no longer useful after extracting the coffee grounds. As part of Nespresso’s commitment to sustainability, they launched a recycling program that turns the used aluminum capsules into new products. These efforts were recently launched in the country through Nespresso Recycling Journey. This event showed the process of repurposing the capsules to Nespresso consumers and guests.

Commitment to sustainability

WWF Philippines National Ambassador Marc Nelson spearheaded the presentation of the recycling journey. He explained how it all starts with you, the Nespresso consumer, to be eco-conscious. The first step is to claim your recycling bag at a Nespresso boutique. You can also opt to buy it online together with your usual coffee orders. Fill the bag with your used capsules and drop it off at the different collection points. Nespresso Philippines gathers these capsules and sends them to their partner organizations for upcycling and recycling.

Locally, Nespresso partnered with Katipunan Metals Foundation, artisans from Negrense Volunteers for Change (NVC) Foundation, and farmers from Nutriganics Farm and Saret Organic Farmville. The Negrense Foundation turns the aluminum capsules into beautiful artworks. They sell these and use the proceeds to support their social and livelihood programs. For Katipunan Metals, they melt the capsules and use them to produce new aluminum products.

Saret Organic Farmville potted lettuce plants.

It’s also good to note that even the remaining coffee grounds in the used capsules are also useful for farm partners. They use the grounds as natural compost or fertilizers for their crops and plants like lettuce.

Recycling is a collective effort

Nespresso recognizes the need for recycling. This is why they use aluminum for their packaging as it can be recycled into different products. Aluminum is also the best material to preserve the freshness, aroma, and flavor of the coffee.

Novateur Coffee Concepts Managing Director Patrick Pesengco explained that the program encourages customers to be responsible consumers. The recycling movement is a collective effort but it all starts with you.

Nespresso capsules can be donated to collection points at Power Plant Mall, Rockwell, Nespresso Pop Up stores at The Podium, Greenbelt, One Bonifacio, Rustan’s Department Stores in Makati, Shangrila, and Alabang.
