Home Front: The Little Things I Did To Lift My Spirits Up While In Lockdown - The Scene

With the future remaining uncertain, it’s best to train your eyes to things around you. Here are some tips to remain forever thinking forward in challenge times.

To say that this wave of the pandemic is overwhelming is the understatement of the century. It seems that there’s a new tragedy that unfolds before our eyes through our social feeds every day. It’s been exhausting and hopeless, and the end seems to be nowhere in sight. In times like these we must do everything to take care of each other, help the best way we can and—this is just as important—take care of ourselves.

It’s okay to be tired. It’s okay to unplug from everything and live in your own little world if only to recharge, heal and center yourself. Here are some of the few things I do to escape and rejuvenate even if I’m just at home in my own lovely bubble:

Organize and de-clutter

You’ll be amazed at the treasures and trinkets you’ve accumulated throughout the years. It’s always nice to free up space to make way for a work-from-home office or a home gym.

You can give away the things you don’t need. If, however, you’re not willing to part ways with your valuable haul, then you might want to check out services such as Keepr Storage.

Keep your space clean

When you start tidying up, you’ll find out that the old adage of cleanliness being next to godliness is true. You will also find that it is okay to invest in handy gadgets that will keep your livable spaces livable. Dyson’s Digital Slim Fluffy Vaccum, for example is a useful assistant during these times especially since cleaners are typically not allowed in condo developments.

This Dyson is a godsend to people like me who abhor strands of hair that land on bathroom floors. Twenty percent smaller and 30 percent lighter than its regular line, it’s easier to maneuver around tight corners.

Learn at home

A MasterClass subscription can be a gateway to a cornucopia of knowledge you never knew you needed. So far I’ve finished classes by Shonda Rimes, Anna Wintour, Sara Blakely and Marc Jacobs. You won’t believe the amazing insights you’ll get from the professors here.

There is much to learn that will expand your horizons and open up  opportunities for you. You can use this to pivot your existing business or even create new ones.

Invest in nice tableware

Since dining out is limited and we eat most of the time at home, ramping up the dinner table through new flatware can be a good idea. It also makes me feel that I’m in a different place. Seeing nice things while dining always brightens up my day, and even the humblest of take outs will look super IG worthy in Versace Rosenthals and Fornasetti and with some beautiful table accessories from Perla Manila.

You can get these luxury and sophisticated plates at Opulence and the beautiful table accessories from Pie Alvarez’s Instagram account @PieAlvares or @perlamanila. Her digital store imports a lot from Colombia and India.

Be entertained

Get a Netflix, Viu and Apple TV subscriptions. You will not regret it. Currently I’m hooked on Netflix’s Fire Fly Lane, Vincenzo, The Serpent, Lupin, and New Amsterdam, just to name a few.

Viu is great for Korean dramas and Apple TV is nice if you want to catch up on the new seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, Queen of the South or watch movies that were not shown in the theaters due to the pandemic like Wonder Woman 1984.

Buy good chairs

Your back will thank you for it for years to come. I love the Herman Miller Aeron Chair for those long work at home sessions, seated all day. It’s heaven. For watching TV and bingeing like a true couch potato, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is so worth it. And since I like working and eating on the couch, the Vitra Jasper Morrison table is manna from heaven. It’s flexible and adjustable to what’s perfect for you.

Think of these chairs as the pounds of prevention to avoid the hundreds of thousands you’ll spend correcting a bad spine and posture. You might want to check out CWC Interiors. While their physical showrooms in Makati, BGC and Cebu remain open to the public, all of their premium pieces are now available for purchase online through newly launched shopping portal.

Plan a trip

Do your research now for a journey in the (hopefully) near future. You won’t believe the amazing value to be had now when you book early. Check out AirSWIFT for reasonable flights and their new beautiful destinations. You can discover surprising hotel pre-booking vouchers and a lot of freebies as well.

The Break-Free three-day stay vouchers of Discovery Shores Boracay and Club Paradise Coron, for example, are available starting at P27,998 nett. It includes a total of P6,000 resort credits for use in the resorts’ restaurant outlets and spa. Or better yet plan a work from the beach and discover their great offerings.

I hope these tips will help you cope in the strange times we’re all in. Just hold on and keep the faith. This too shall pass.
