Last month marked the 52nd anniversary of how the Omega Speedmaster gained its nickname. Having joined the landmark July 1969 lunar trip on the wrist of Buzz Aldrin, the timepiece then on became known as the Moonwatch.

While its fame was cemented by man’s journey to the moon, the Speedmaster has been seen throughout the decades on stars, from George Clooney to Tom Hanks to Daniel Craig.

And, with the recent introduction of the new Speedmaster Moonwatch Master Chronometer collection, its affinity to celebrity is continued with the likes of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil, and Nadine Lustre and James Reid.

Updating a classic

Inspired by the timeless design of the fourth generation Speedmaster Moonwatch worn by NASA astronauts, the Speedmaster Moonwatch Master Chronometer collection was upgraded with a Co-Axial Master Chronometer 3861 calibre.

This effort took four years to perfect. The hand-wound movement offers a power reserve of 50 hours and has evolved from the famous Calibre 321 that was worn on the moon.

It has been tested and certified at the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, and offers exceptional precision as well as magnetic resistance up to 15,000 gauss.

Design-wise, the most recent update of the Moonwatch features an asymmetrical 42mm case that’s presented on a five-arched-links-per-row bracelet, and is delivered either in stainless steel, 18K Sedna gold, a rose gold alloy exclusive to Omega, or in 18K Canopus Goldan exclusive and otherworldly white gold alloy of high brilliance.

A choice of hesalite glass with an embossed Seahorse caseback or a case with sapphire-crystal glass on both sides provides tasteful options for very discerning preferences.

Celebrity picks

The watchmaker’s keen eye for detail is manifested on the surface of the new Speedmaster Moonwatch with its sun-brushed silvery or black step-dial and incorporation of the famous dot over 90 (DON) and dot diagonal to 70 on the anodised aluminum bezel ring.

Each celebrity pair wore timepieces that best suited their taste and personality.

Bernardo and Padilla wore the 18K Canopus Gold Speedmaster Moonwatch while Soberano and Gil opted for ones with the leather strap. Lustre also went with the 18K Canopus Gold while Reid wore the 18K Sedna gold design.
