3 Out-of-This World Things We Love About Gucci's Fall/Winter '17 Campaign -

The images from the 1954 black-and-white monster movie Creature from the Black Lagoon has always been memorable in pop culture. Numerous motion pictures, television shows, and even magazine editorials have invoked inspiration from that iconic image of a monster rising from the black water, carrying a pretty girl. But what if that girl was a model and dressed in the latest garments from the Gucci Fall/Winter 2017 collection?

Gucci has been far from secretive during preparations of their new sci-fi inspired campaign. Those who follow their Instagram account were afforded a sneak peek a couple of months ago when a video of an unidentified (but fashionable) Mr. Alien was uploaded onto their feed wearing a new printed coat and striped scarf. The latest campaign photographed by Glen Luchford is filled with throwbacks to sci-fi movies, impressive production design, stunning extra-terrestrial makeup, and retro-interstellar looks by creative director Alessandro Michele. Here are three things we love about Gucci’s Fall/Winter 17 Campaign.

It is a reminder that fashion has no limits

When most of the aspiration fashion brands of the early 2000s were beginning to cool down in popularity, many took a backseat and found it difficult to adapt and impress a new generation of consumers. However, Gucci (with the help of Creative Director Alessandro Michele), has remained fun and inventive. Michele’s Gucci is inspired by both the retro and the maximalist. His vision has created a new signature that is primarily associated with the Gucci brand—heavy prints, large logos, colors splashed all throughout the wardrobe—something that can easily be found in the closet of any member of the Tenenbaum family. This new campaign is a reminder that there are no limits in fashion and that creative risks are a must. Although a few websites have shared that Michele is not the only Creative Director to be inspired by sci-fi and the unknown, it is the combination of his brand and the idea of the campaign that forms out-of-this-world perfection.

Alessandro Michele’s looks are so intergalactic cool that we’re ready for a Gucci invasion

Alessandro Michele has been with the brand for over 12 years, working his way up from being the Leather Goods Design Director to Creative Director in 2015. As Alessandro’s artistry flourished, so did Gucci. Arguably, he has been responsible for a new renaissance with the brand. His work for the Fall/Winter 17 are new signs of his genius. Inspired by all things vintage, Alessandro went literal—creating pieces that look as if they came straight out of a different time. The new maximalist collection features Gucci’s floral prints on dresses, vests, flared trousers and even men’s coats that is seems extremely intergalactic. Matched with the new campaign and styling, the new garments are eye catching enough for us to welcome in a Gucci invasion.

The abundance of 1950s and 1960s sci-fi references

Films and television have always fueled the minds of artists—as they like to say, art inspires art. Gucci has chosen sci-fi as the backdrop of their latest campaign. Photographs and videos portray models running wild for a trip in a UFO, spaceship captains are dressed in couture from head to toe ready to port down to Earth, and male models exploring new worlds in knitwear with fox prints. Alessandro Michele has used an extensive lists of references from iconic sci-fi movies and shows that helped express his vision. A few we spotted: a team of fierce humans and aliens aboard a familiar Star Trek-like ship, the creature and girl from Creature from the Dark Lagoon, a man in vintage-inspired jeans fighting off Godzilla, male models scouting the wonders of a Forbidden Planet, and a Mia Farrow-esque figure meeting a being from the Planet of the Apes.
