The kids of the Upper East Side—and their glamorous wardrobes—are set to return in a couple of months.
Since we bid farewell to the original Gossip Girl in 2012, none of us expected (or were waiting around for, to be honest) that we would see its return almost a decade later. From the snapshots alone, we know it is going to be as dapper and delightful as the original. Better yet, the looks seem to be diverse as this fresh lineup of actors, and appear to be a true Gen Z take of Manhattan’s elite style.
Set to premiere this year on HBO Max, the reboot will see the return of the original costume director Eric Daman. After Gossip Girl wrapped up nine years ago, the 50-year-old industry veteran moved on to other hit shows and movies, including The Carrie Diaries, Love, Simon, and, more recently, The Falcon and Winter Soldier.
A fresh take
In the original series, the characters had endless ways to modify their uniform in Constance Billard School for Girls. Fashion inspirations came in the preppy style of Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester), the edgy and punk vibe of Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen), and the boho-chic or Kate Moss-inspired looks of Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively).
The reboot cast should follow this tradition, and display their personal style. Jordan Alexander, Whitney Peak, Emily Alyn Lind, Zion Moreno, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, and newcomers Savannah Smith and Evan Mock star in the series. Going by the Gossip Girl Instagram account, the characters have distinct, easily distilled personalities that make should make style individuality interesting. (We wonder what kind of OOTD’s “innocence,” “ambition,” “privilege,” and “perspective” would inspire.)
Interestingly, behind-the-scenes photos show the cast wearing comfortable pieces, from dresses, sneakers, and oversized sweaters to shorts and baggy jeans. They may have worn these in-between takes but these ultimately highlight Gen Z’s preference for athleisure and gender-neutral wear.
Echoing personalities
The one-word descriptions of the characters already give an idea of their personality and role in the group’s dynamics. Naturally, these are reflected in the collection of bags, accessories, and fashion pieces they are wearing for the television show.
Zoya Lot (Peak) favors comfort and minimal adjustments on her school uniform. From sweaters, eye-catching socks, graphic bags, to the school’s signature forest green plaid, Lot appears to be a laidback character.
Grace, elegance, and refreshing minimalism embody Audrey Hope’s style (Lind) as she prefers stripes and bold white and black contrasts. The hip and athletic Julien Calloway (Alexander), meanwhile, dons the private school’s varsity jacket, pairing it with loose polo shirts over bike shorts, and Balenciaga’s Triple S sneakers.
Apparently embodying “style,” Luna La (Moreno) is dressed in designer labels like Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and Fendi. (Those suede kitten heeled-boots also didn’t miss our eyes.)
Monet de Haan (Smith) prefers to mix things up by throwing on a Balmain blazer over a chic ensemble and finishing things with a Chanel belt, or pairing eye-catching dark patterns together.
As for the men, Akeno Menzies (Mock), Otto Bergmann IV (Brown), and Max Wolfe (played Doherty), embody their key words ‘innocence,’ ‘privilege,’ and ‘freedom,’ style-wise. While they mostly maintain the school uniform of St. Jude’s, they take out pieces to replace with their own pullovers, trousers, and shoes.
