B&B Italia Melds Modern Furniture With Renaissance Touch - Lifestyle Asia

The Italian brand makes modern furniture more distinctive and characterized by exceptional quality and timeless elegance.

Founded in 1966 by the visionary Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, B&B Italia is a leading Italian company in the international world of designer furniture. It specialises in fittings for both homes (B&B Italia Home Division) and contract (B&B Italia Contract Division). Based in Novedrate, north of Milan, the company set itself apart from its competitors by pioneering an innovative industrial approach to manufacturing, in contrast to the small, artisan way that’s being practiced by the sector.

B&B Italia’s international philosophy is reflected in its products and wide reaching distribution. It is currently present in more than 80 countries worldwide and has established its direct presence with the opening of wholly owned flagship stores in leading capital cities around the world. Its culture and production know-how are still at the brand’s core even after 50 years, making it an industry for design.

The brand’s internal Research & Development Centre is its hub for cultural meetings and experiences. It fuels ongoing research, innovation, and experimentation of product designs, brand identity and retail design, materials, technologies, and processes. The R&D Centre bears a strong relationship with world-renowned designers. This has been the key factor in the strategic advancement of the company and have led to the creation of some of the most iconic pieces of furniture we know today.

Le Bambole by Mario Bellini

Mario Bellini’s Le Bambole has become an icon of modern design and one of the most effective executions of “Made in Italy” that combines research and creative flair. The series grew to be an emblem of the 1970s and won the “Compasso d’Oro” award (Golden Compass Award), one of the most prestigious design awards in Italy in 1979. What makes the series special is the apparent absence of a load-bearing structure, the extreme naturalness of their shape, and the combination of comfort, softness and elasticity. “Le Bambole are not covered in fabric, instead they are built of fabric,” said Bellini.

Moon System by Zaha Hadid

Emulating the awe-inspiring elements of the moon is Zaha Hadid’s unique masterpiece for B&B Italia, the Moon System. Through the years, the Moon System has proven to be a genuinely unique designer piece, specially curated for clients with a peculiar, artistic taste. This piece represents the architect’s reinterpretation of the sofa seating form with her acclaimed, radical, structural vocabulary of complex curves and profound fluidity. Indeed, Hadid refers to her creation as an attempt to “liquefy” the conventional sofa form.

The Moon System exhibits the complexity of geometry like no other conventional furniture piece. It conveys a free-flowing one-piece look, as if being carved from a single element, liquefying the soft edges of the design. Its unmistakable distinctive profile makes it a powerfully iconic sofa sculpture, worthy of the center stage of a room.

Tobi-Ishi by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby

Named after ornamental stones used in traditional Japanese gardens and a surface reminiscent of the stones’ perfect texture, Tobi-Ishi embodies the beauty and simplicity of a modern sculptural design table. Designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the sculptural Tobi-Ishi table has impressed both architects and designers alike. The overhang of the table and the vertical trapezoidal bases set at right angles generate an essential sculptural figure that appears to change shape depending on the point of observation. It has also been selected for inclusion in the prestigious XXIII Compasso d’Oro design award program.

Papilio Collection by Naoto Fukasawa

“I wanted the chair to look naturally comfortable, to have the same shape that relaxation would have if it were represented by an image,” expressed Naoto Fukasawa. The designer is known for putting people’s behaviour before an interest for shape, and this can be seen in his own Papilio Collection. The wings that extend at the sides of the chair emphasise the sensation of comfort: in the chair and the small armchair, they help support the hips and the back. The same spirit of simplicity, immediacy and comfort have guided the functional development of the entire Papilio series: the Grande Papilio and Piccola Papilio armchairs, the chairs Papilio and Mini Papilio, the Love Papilio sofa and the Papilio bed. The intriguing pieces come in contemporary hues suited to modern homes.

These and many more iconic pieces have led B&B Italia to be presented with multiple illustrious awards, including no less than 4 Compasso D’Oro prizes, the most prestigious honor in the field of Italian industrial design.

A true contributor to the rich history of Italian design that’s based on technology, creativity, and style, B&B Italia’s furniture collection have the ability to reflect contemporary culture and respond to the ever-changing lifestyles, habits, and requirements of the market. It showcases modern furniture elements that are distinctive and characterized by exceptional quality and timeless elegance reminiscent of Renaissance expertise.
