Defining the Best of Filipinos in Art at the Leon Gallery -

It was a feast for the eays at Leon Gallery’ Spectacular Mid-Year Auction 2016. Significant pieces of art by reknowned masters Fernando Amorsolo, Carlos “Botong” Francisco, Jose Joya, Malang Santos, Fernando Zobel, BenCab, Betsy Westendorp, Arturo Luz, Ang Kiukok and Federico Alcuaz and contemporary artists Andres Barrioquinto, Ronald Ventura, Alfredo Esquillo, Geraldine Javier and Elmer Borlongan were auctioned off to the highest bidder.

One of the highlights of the event was the auction of Jose Rizal’s sculputre of a wild boar. Inherited by direct descent from Rizal’s older sister Narcisa Lopez, the Jabali sculpture remained with the family until it was auctioned off at this edition that hammered at P16,352,000.

Some of the highest sold pieces were Ben Cab’s Isadora In Motion, a fitting tribute that depicts the elegance of celebrated dancer Isadora Duncan that hammered at P37,376,000. Carlos “Botong” Francisco depiction of a colorful fiesta in Angono dated 1960 was sold at a stammering P30,368,000. Portraits of socialite Chona Recto Ysmael Kasten by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo and international master Claudio Bravo. These immortalization of “La divina Chona” ware sold at P2,569,600 (Amorsolo) and P2,219,200 (Bravo).
