Deepening Dialogues in Art Basel Hong Kong 2018 - Arts & Culture

The sixth edition of the international art fair in Hong Kong brings together a wide and diverse collection of art and artists from the region and the rest of the world

Art Basel Hong Kong provides art enthusiasts the opportunity to see high caliber art all under one roof. The two cavernous floors of the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Center bring together old masters with contemporary and modern art, as well as Western and Asian art.  It draws a considerable crowd who can easily spend a whole day or more contemplating, examining or admiring the eclectic range on display. It is best appreciated by coming with an open mind and a sense of curiosity because art can take one by surprise, engaging in a dialogue, and communicating a message that one may not have even thought was possible.

Conversations with Collectors, Curators and Artists

This year, there were 248 galleries represented coming from 32 countries. Half of the galleries were from Asia, providing a great opportunity to see diverse works from across the region. The fair, now on its 6th edition, has not only been getting better each year but has undoubtedly transformed Hong Kong into a cultural hub and the go-to place for Asian art, a testament to the importance and growth of the Asian collectors market. The energy is palpable and the increased sophistication of the art market clearly visible.

Art Basel offers a great platform for expression and an opportunity for galleries and artists to showcase their best works. But there is more to Art Basel than just the works hanging on the walls. There are other expressions of art in the form of film, VR work (which is so interesting and offers new perspectives), installations, and talks by artists, curators and collectors all looking to deepen the dialogue. There is plenty to absorb and learn, more so if you go out of your way to engage in a conversation with either the artist, the curator, or the gallery to understand the meaning behind the work that has been produced.

Art City

During this one week, the city comes alive with a host of gallery exhibits, this year the highlight being the new gallery building at H Queens on Queens Road, opening parties, nearby Art Central showcasing emerging artists, and Harbour Arts Sculpture Park featuring works by Yayoi Kusama, Antony Gormley and Tracy Emin, to name a few.

Art Basel Hong Kong is annually held at the Convention & Exhibition Centre, 1 Harbour Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, China.
