Check-In: Airbnb Is Giving Away $10 Million to People with Quirky Ideas for Experiential Stays - Travel

The 100 winning ideas will be featured under Airbnb’s OMG! category.

When looking for unusual accommodations, Airbnb is one of the platforms to make the arrangements. Beyond city center condos or lake houses amid nature, some of their rentals serve as experiences themselves. With options like a yellow submarine in New Zealand, a double-decker retro camping bus in Portugal, and a Potato Hotel in Idaho—nothing seems off-limits.

In fact, they’re giving away $100,000 to100 people who come up with more quirky ideas to make their plans come to life.

Experiential accommodations

Named the OMG! Fund, Airbnb will feature the winning listings in Airbnb’s OMG! Category. Launched last month, instead of only inputting location and dates on the search box, people can browse through different lists, including but not limited to off-the-grid, surfing, camping, houseboats, towers, and historical spaces.

To apply, participants need to describe their concept. And its judges are recognizable names in the art, fashion, and design industries: fashion and interior design figure Iris Apfel, the Airbnb Potato Hotel creator Kristie Wolfe, award-winning Sydney-based architect Koichi Takada, and Airbnb’s VP of experiential Bruce Vaughn.

If the idea makes the second round, applicants must share the vision in more detail with blueprints, plans, and a video.

With $10 million to be given away, the vacation rental company is looking for originality, experience, feasibility, and sustainability from the entries.

El Nido glamping site

However, travelers seeking unexpected spaces already have global options under Airbnb’s OMG! Section, many being right in the Philippines.

In El Nido, there’s a glamping site on Nacpan Beach. For an alternative camping experience, a jeepney camper sits in Tanay, Rizal. If you want to be among Baguio’s pinewood forest, treehouses are available for stays.
