Breaking it Down: Why Retinol is Essential to Skincare, But Can Be Tricky to Use - Mirror,Mirror

One skincare brand says it has a solution.

Commonly found in skincare products, retinol can visibly eliminate noticeable signs of aging by creating a “plumping effect.” However, it has a downside: it can be tricky for those with sensitive skin.

Retinol’s potency can cause a number of side effects, including dryness, redness, and peeling, usually in the early stages of use. Without expert guidance, applying retinol to the skin can cause more inconvenience than benefit to the user.

Kiehl’s has apparently found a solution: taking things slow.

Recognizing retinol need to be introduced gradually, the 170-year-old company developed called micro-dosing. They are introducing this innovation through their Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum, which they say is carefully calibrated to promote cellular transformation.

They also say that its formula strengthens the skin barrier and increase skin tolerance to retinol from the first application.

Levana Dermatology Clinic’s Dr. Mara Evangelista-Huber says Kiehl’s serum is stable, consisting of multifunctional ingredients that protect the skin barrier.

“The best slow-down-aging skin care plan requires five steps: protecting against sun damage, hydrating the skin, stimulating skin renewal, promoting collagen production and living a healthy lifestyle,” Evangelista-Huber explains during the serum’s virtual launch. “An effective retinoid depends on its ability to transform into a retinoic acid, its stability, its concentration and user satisfaction.”

Scientific approach

In Kiehl’s clinical evaluations, it showed that 100 percent of users showered reduced wrinkles, 90 percent presented improved firmness and 94 percent displayed refined texture within 12 weeks of using Kiehl’s Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum.

Another study showed that wrinkles were reduced after four weeks of use and skin looked firmer after eight weeks. Ninety percent of respondents agreed that their skin felt comfortable throughout use, even if they were using retinol for the first time.

“We wanted to formulate a retinol product that could be used every day from the start with minimal discomforting effects, while still offering powerful anti-aging skin benefits,” explains Dr. Nancy Ilaya, Kiehl’s global scientific director. Its formulation contains peptides, which supports and sustains the repair benefits of retinol. It also has ceramides, which releases vital skin barrier lipids to build retinol tolerance and prevent dryness.

According to the makers, the serum can be used during the day or night and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. To use, simply apply one pump to cleansed skin, followed by a moisturizer and broad spectrum SPF during the day for best results. It can be applied to areas where signs of aging may appear, such as the eye area, neck, décolleté, and back of the hands.
