Asian Masters Zao Wou-Ki and Georgette Chen lead the offerings while South East Asian artists also take center stage with an exhibit preview set for August 25 to 27
Responding to ever-increasing demand for works from the region, Sotheby’s will hold its first auction of Modern and Contemporary Art in Singapore, with 50 Modern and Contemporary art offerings by Asian masters, including Georgette Chen, Zao Wou-Ki, Chu The-Chun, Yayoi Kusama and Le Pho, together with works by both established and emerging international artists, such as Georges Mathieu, Javier Calleja and MR.

Sotheby’s Managing Director for Southeast Asia, Jasmine Prasetio, says, “Sotheby’s has long believed in the importance of nurturing and growing opportunities across the region. This auction marks not only our continued commitment to Asia and, more specifically, to the market in Southeast Asia, but also our belief in Singapore as a vibrant hub for collectors with a thriving art scene.”
The sale will be led by Singaporean Modern Art pioneer Georgette Chen’s “Boats and Shophouses,” depicting a tranquil boat quay in Singapore during the 1960s, and internationally renowned Abstract artist Zao Wou-Ki’s “Sans Titre, Entre Août Et Décembre 1958,” an exquisite and rare example from the artist’s celebrated ‘Oracle Bone’ series, which marked his transition to abstract art. Works by Vietnamese and Indonesian artists are also peppered throughout, such as Le Pho and Mai Trung Thu’s signature floral paintings and portraits, as well as rare pieces by Walter Spies, Willem Gerard Hofker and Hendra Gunawan.
Responding to the great demand from collectors both in Asia and globally, the auction will also feature works by those artists making waves across the art world today, including Michel Majerus and Rafa Macarrón.
Carrying an overall estimate in the region of $18 million Singapore dollars or $10 million US dollars, the auction will be live streamed to the world via sothebys.com on August 28, following a preview exhibition at the Regent Singapore at 1 Cuscaden Road from August 25-27.
