If you are yet to hear about Mestiza New York, get on it ASAP. The Manhattan-based ready-to-wear brand was inspired by the well-heeled Filipina society ladies of the 1960s, reports Forbes.com’s Bianca Salonga.
Founded by Alessandra Perez-Rubio and Louisa Rechter (who’s bloodlines and heritage can be traced back to the archipelago), the brand is garnering a name in the fashion scene as the one to watch, providing women with couture-like options at better prices. Printed fabrics on long gowns, casual dresses with tassels, and weaved clothing options are all made from Filipino fabrics, giving Mestiza New York their distinctive look.
The two young founders have worked in close collaboration with the HABI Philippine Textile Council, a Manila-based organization helping sustain the fabric industry in the country. This has allowed Mestiza New York not only the chance to support the local artisan scene, but also gives them a signature Filipino look that has been stealing the hearts of an international audience.
