Since 1904, the Santos de Cartier watch from luxury French maison Cartier has “inspired imagination and creativity to tell the legendary tale of a determined and uncompromising quest to excel.” In 2018, Cartier has just announced a new partnership with the young, Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal, as the new face of the iconic watch.

After appearing on screen in the cult classic Donnie Darko (2001), Gyllenhaal became a rising star to watch in Hollywood. By his mid-twenties, he was already Oscar nominated for his work in Ang Lee’s cowboy romance-drama Brokeback Mountain (2005). He also won the BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Jack Twist. Cartier says that it was Gyllenhaal’s curiosity and fearless, pioneering spirit that made him the ideal face of the Santos de Cartier and what it represents. “Jake Gyllenhaal embodies the Santos de Cartier man. A man who commits utterly and does nothing by halves. A man who defines fearless as honest and true to himself,” they released in a statement last week.
With every film, Gyllenhaal reveals a new side of his talent. His pristine filmography reflects in his diverse choices in roles, which include David Fincher’s investigative thriller Zodiac (2007), Tom Ford’s dark revenge mystery Nocturnal Animals (2016), and his latest film Stronger (2018), in which he plays Boston Bombing survivor Jeff Bauman to much critical praise.
