A Complete List of Pulitzer Prize Winners for 2018 (and it Includes Rapper Kendrick Lamar and #MeToo’s Ronan Farrow)! - Arts & Culture

Since 1917, the Pulitzer Prize has been given to newspapers, magazines, reporters, online journalists, fiction and non-fiction writers, and musical composers for excellence in their respective fields. Founded by newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer (and administered by New York’s Columbia University), the awards are one of the most highly regarded in the world when it comes to honoring the media. Previous recipients of the elusive prize include such names like William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, August Wilson, and composer Gian Carlo Menotti.

Each winner of the Pulitzer Prize is awarded a certificate and $15,000 honorarium. Victors of the Public Service Pulitzer are given a gold medal. Not all media is considered by Pulitzer. Applicants must enter their specific prize category with an entry fee of $50 per desired category. A single work can only be submitted in a maximum of two categories. After acceptance, 20 separate juries (of 102 jurors in total) deliberate on all 21 award categories. Each jury makes three nominations before the board selects its winners by a 75% majority vote.

This year, singer-songwriter Kendrick Lamar has become the first rapper to win in the category of music for his groundbreaking album DAMN. The landmark win is a follow up of previous victories at the Grammy Awards (for Best Rap Album of the Year) and the NAACP Image Awards (Outstanding Album). Lamar’s album topped charts in the United States and Canada, and peaked at number two in such countries like Australia, Belgium, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. This marks the very first time that the Pulitzer Prize for music was not awarded to a classical or jazz composition.

Journalist and activist Ronan Farrow was also awarded through The New Yorker, who published his extensive reporting on the #MeToo movement and his exposé of fallen Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Farrow reached out to multiple actresses and had compiled years of research to shed light on sexual abuse in the filmmaking industry. Congratulations to all the talented women and men who won this year! Scroll down to see a complete list of winners…
